The residential complex of the former monastery Basilian
Residential complex of the former Basilian monastery – one of the most significant landmarks of the city of Orsha. This architectural ensemble, founded in the 18th century, attracts tourists with its rich history, magnificent architecture, and atmosphere of the past. Here, you can feel the spirit of antiquity while walking through the streets that have preserved the unique appearance of the old monastery.
History of the Basilian Monastery in Orsha
The monastery of the Basilian order was founded in 1690 and was originally Uniate. It was located on the right bank of the Orshytsa River. The first buildings were made of wood, while the construction of the stone Church of the Protection of the Virgin and the residential buildings of the Basilian monks dates back to the second half of the 18th century.
For many years, the monastery was an important spiritual and educational center. A school operated here, where the children of the nobility studied, and active educational work was carried out. After the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the monastery gradually lost its religious significance and was converted into a residential complex.
Architecture and Exterior
The residential complex of the former Basilian monastery in Orsha has preserved unique features of late Baroque and Classicism, despite numerous changes over the centuries. The main buildings are made of brick and designed in a restrained style characteristic of 18th-century architecture.
The main element of the ensemble is the former Church of St. Joseph – its massive walls, high arched windows, and symmetrical facade composition create a majestic appearance. Despite the loss of church decoration, the building has retained the monumentality and strict elegance typical of Basilian monasteries.
The monks’ cells, now converted into residential buildings, are two-story structures with high ceilings and vaulted corridors. Narrow streets between the buildings, old gates, and arched openings give the complex a special historical charm. The atmosphere of this place immerses visitors in the past, creating a sense of touching Orsha's ancient history.
