Polotsk is one of the oldest cities in Belarus, located in the Vitebsk region. The first mentions of it date back to the year 862. The city’s history is closely linked to the era of the Principality of Polotsk and its rulers. Francysk Skaryna’s Publishing Legacy

Skaryna’s greatest achievement was the publication of the first printed book in Belarus — the Psalter. His printing house, founded in 1520 in Vilnius, published books such as the Little Travel Book and the Apostle. Later, in 1535, Francysk Skaryna moved to Prague, where he practiced medicine until his death in 1551.

Architectural Features of the Monument

The monument to Francysk Skaryna was erected in Polotsk in 1974. The authors of the sculpture were A. Hlebau, I. Hlebau, A. Zaspitsky, and V. Marokin. The composition features a bronze statue standing 5.5 meters tall, mounted on a granite pedestal over 6 meters high. The total height of the monument reaches 12 meters. Skaryna is depicted in a flowing robe, holding a book—a symbol of knowledge—while his pose reflects deep contemplation and philosophical thought.

Restoration and the Current State of the Monument
