The building of the former clerical school
One of the remarkable architectural monuments of Gomel is the building of the former theological school, located on Biletsky Street. It was built at the end of the 18th – beginning of the 19th century and was originally conceived as a summer residence for Count Rumyantsev. Over time, the building changed its purpose, becoming an educational institution, and later an administrative and academic building. Today, this structure is part of the Gomel State Medical University, yet its historical value continues to attract tourists and researchers.
History of Creation
Originally, the building was designed by British architect John Clark and was intended to be part of the Rumyantsev palace and park complex. In 1804, a theological school was established within its walls, providing both religious and general education. By the late 19th century, it had become a city theological institution where the children of clergy members were educated. After the 1917 revolution, the school ceased its activities, and in 1919 the building was transferred to the public education system. Later, it housed military courses and various administrative institutions.
Architecture
Built in the classical style, the building has preserved elements of the original design despite subsequent renovations. Its facade is adorned with symmetrical window openings and a distinctive pediment executed in the Baroque style. The interior has undergone changes over time, yet the building’s appearance still reflects the spirit of the late 18th – early 19th century.
