Staroselskoye Settlement is a unique historical monument that bears
witness to Belarus’ ancient past. It is located in the Gomel Region and represents
the remnants of a fortified settlement that existed for several centuries.
The settlement is situated on a high hill, surrounded by natural barriers
and artificial ramparts, ensuring its protection from enemies. This site
attracts history, archaeology, and cultural heritage enthusiasts and is
also part of popular excursions in Belarus.
History of the Staroselskoye Settlement
According to archaeological data, the Staroselskoye Settlement emerged in the 9th–10th centuries and was an important center of Eastern Slavic settlements. It was inhabited by the Dregovichi – one of the ancient Slavic tribes that lived in the territory of modern Belarus. The settlement served as both a defensive stronghold and a trade and craft center, playing a significant role in the economic and political life of the region. In the Middle Ages, the settlement declined, but its cultural heritage has been preserved through numerous finds, including fragments of ceramics, tools, and household items, which can be seen in museums across Belarus.
Architecture and Spiritual Life of the Staroselskoye Settlement
The Staroselskoye Settlement stands out for its fortification system. The ramparts and moats that have survived to this day testify to the high level of settlement defense. The main fortifications were built of wood and earth, creating powerful bastions capable of withstanding sieges. Inside the settlement, there were residential buildings, forges, and economic yards. Archaeologists suggest that a sacred site may have existed here, where locals worshiped pagan gods, and later – after the arrival of Christianity – the first wooden churches might have been built.
