The synagogue in Tshetshersk

Chechersk Synagogue is a historic building from the early 19th century, associated with the life of the Jewish community in the city of Chechersk. History

The first Jews settled in Chechersk in the 17th century. By the beginning of the 19th century, the size of the community allowed for the construction of a stone synagogue, which, according to various sources, was completed around 1800.

Before World War II, there were several Jewish prayer houses in Chechersk. In 1941–1942, most of the Jewish population was destroyed during the Holocaust. The synagogue building was preserved but lost its original purpose after the war and was later transferred to an evangelical community. Today, it serves as a prayer house for Christian Baptists.

Architecture

The building is made of brick, rectangular in shape, single-story, with a simple facade typical for provincial religious buildings of the 19th century. Despite losses, the layout, window openings, and roofing allow it to be identified as a monument of late synagogue architecture of Eastern Europe.

Cultural and Historical Significance

The Chechersk synagogue is the only surviving object directly linked to the Jewish heritage of Chechersk. It symbolizes the contribution of the Jewish community to the cultural and economic life of the city and serves as a reminder of the tragedy of the Holocaust.

Despite the change in religious purpose, the building retains its status as an object of historical and cultural value and is part of the list of attractions related to the history of the Jewish community and the Holocaust in the region.
