History of Creation
The history of the church and the Franciscan monastery dates back to 1635 when the famous philanthropist Jerzy Kurcz and his wife Zuzanna decided to establish a Franciscan monastery. This step was driven by a desire to spread the Catholic faith and strengthen the position of the Franciscan order in Grodno. In the 17th century, the monastery became an important spiritual center around which the religious life of the city developed.
Over the centuries, the church and monastery complex have witnessed numerous historical events, including wars, the partitions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and political regime changes. Despite difficult times, the church never ceased its activities, remaining a center of Catholic faith. This makes it unique among more than 20 Franciscan churches that once existed in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
