St. Nicholas Church in Krychau is not just a place of worship but a living chronicle of Belarusian history, nestled on the ancient Castle Hill. Seamlessly integrated into the cityscape, it serves as a spiritual and cultural center well worth visiting as part of an excursion from Minsk or a customized tour through the Mogilev region.

History

The first records of a church on Castle Hill date back to 1682. Even then, St. Nicholas Church held a prominent position inside the fortress, near the entrance tower. Throughout the 17th–18th centuries, the building repeatedly changed hands between Orthodox and Uniate communities. During the Great Northern War, Krychau Castle was destroyed, but the church miraculously survived. Difficult times continued into the 20th century — after the fire of 1944, local residents rebuilt the sanctuary almost from scratch. A wooden house was purchased from a nearby village, floated down the Sozh River, and transformed into the new church, which was consecrated in 1945. Until the early 1990s, it remained the only functioning church in Krychau.

Architecture

Though modest in size, the church impresses with its distinctive appearance. It features a two-tiered wooden drum topped with an onion-shaped dome that gives it a recognizable silhouette. The façades are adorned with carved window frames (lishtvany), adding a touch of national style and warmth. Over time, the church was expanded to include an apse and a baptistery, which blend harmoniously with the original structure.
