Church of Saint Onufrij in Onufrievo

Type: Churches Date of Foundation: 1 century Status: Republican value Republic of Belarus, Mogilev region, Mstislavl distrikt, v. Onufrievo

Church of St. Onuphrius is located on the southern outskirts of the village of Onufrievo. It is a unique architectural monument of Belarus, built of brick on the territory of an Orthodox monastery founded in 1407 by Prince Semyon Lughven of Mstsislaw. However, some sources suggest that the monastery appeared in the 14th century, thanks to Prince Yuri of Smolensk. Inside the church, portraits of Semyon's son, Yuri, and his wife, Sophia, were kept, emphasizing its historical significance.

Historical changes: from Uniate to Orthodox

In the 17th century, the church was converted to Uniate Catholicism, but in 1836, it was restored as an Orthodox church. It was also used to serve the needs of the "plow soldiers" of military settlements. The church has survived different eras and retained its unique appearance despite numerous transformations.

What remains of the ancient monastery?

Only two structures remain from the once vast monastery complex: the Onuphrius Church, built in the second half of the 17th century, and the monastic residence, constructed about fifty years later. These buildings are invaluable witnesses to the architectural and religious heritage of Belarus.

Architectural features of St. Onuphrius Church

St. Onuphrius Church is an outstanding example of late Baroque architecture. It is a single-nave church with a semicircular apse, a tall five-tiered bell tower, and a massive plinth foundation. The facades are adorned with pilasters, arched portals, and a profiled cornice. Every architectural element showcases the craftsmanship of the builders who created this religious monument.

Wildlife inside the church

Today, the church is home to many birds. A white stork has built its nest on one of the columns, becoming a symbolic representation of life among the ruins. This makes visiting the church an especially atmospheric and memorable experience for tourists.

The deteriorating state of the monument

Unfortunately, the church is in a state of disrepair. A massive crack has appeared on the second tier of the bell tower, and the remaining vaults are slowly collapsing. Without restoration efforts, Belarus may lose one of its significant architectural landmarks.
