Site of ancient settlement of the early Iron Age of Kopyl

Type: Archaeological monuments Republic of Belarus, Minsk region, Kopyl

Kapyl Castle Hill is not only a picturesque elevation at the confluence of the Maza and Kamenka rivers, but also one of the most mysterious archaeological landmarks of the Early Iron Age in Belarus. With its nearly perfect elliptical shape, the hill is believed to be a natural glacial formation later modified by ancient inhabitants to enhance its defensive capabilities. Its upper part resembles a bowl, giving the landscape a distinct character. From the top, breathtaking panoramic views open up, making this site attractive to both scholars and tourists alike.

History

Archaeological excavations on Castle Hill revealed that ancient Dregovich tribes once lived here. Among the discoveries are not only typical household items but also artifacts similar to those found in Viking burials in Scandinavia. These findings led researchers to suggest that Kapyl was part of a vast cultural and trade network of early medieval Europe. Some hypotheses claim that a pagan sanctuary once stood atop the hill, later replaced by a fortified settlement.

During the times of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, from the 14th to the 18th centuries, a wooden castle stood on Castle Hill. Despite its wooden structure, it was considered one of the most significant and strategically important fortresses of its time. It served as the residence of the noble families of Olelkovich and Radziwill. The steep slopes, shaped by nature and reinforced by humans, ensured strong defensive capabilities.
