Spaso-Voznesensky church in Kopyl

Type: Churches Date of Foundation: 1866 year Status: Regional value Republic of Belarus, Minsk, Kopyl, Zhilunovicha street, 2

In the very heart of the town of Kopyl, at a site of spiritual significance for generations, stands the Spaso-Voznesenskaya Church — a majestic monument of Orthodox architecture from the late 19th century. Built in 1866 from rubble stone and brick, the church is shaped like a cross and can hold up to 400 people. From the very beginning, it played an important role in the spiritual life of the region — pilgrims gathered at the church from all surrounding villages. Despite the trials of the 20th century, the church endured closures, wars, and repurposing, and today it is once again open to parishioners and visitors.

History

The church in Kopyl became a symbol of unwavering faith. At the beginning of the 20th century, its parish included more than 5,000 people, but in the 1930s it faced the hardships of persecution. Priest Vladimir Pasternatsky continued to secretly perform rites and was arrested and executed in 1938. He was canonized as a hieromartyr in 2000. During World War II, the church reopened for worship, but in the postwar years, it was again closed and repurposed for secular use. Only in the late 1980s was the building returned to the Orthodox community and began its revival.

Architecture

The church was built in the tradition of Orthodox architecture: single-domed, cross-shaped in layout, constructed from stone and decorated with brickwork. Its high vaults and strict façade lines give the building a solemn and enduring character, symbolizing faith that has withstood the test of time. Inside, the spacious interior accommodates a large congregation and offers an atmosphere of peace and spiritual depth.
