Site of ancient castle Logoisk
The center of ancient Logoysk is the castle site, or Castle Hill. It is located on the right bank of the Haina River in Logoysk Park. Today, it is a city park of culture and recreation. A well-fortified castle once stood on a high earthen rampart.
History of the Logoysk Castle Site: First Mentions
Logoysk is one of the oldest cities in Belarus, and its castle site preserves the memory of many historical events. The first documented mentions date back to 1078 when chronicles described the campaign of Vladimir Monomakh against the Polotsk Principality. This fortification, situated on an elevation, served as a reliable defense for the inhabitants and was an important strategic point in the region.
Architecture and Defensive Structures
The Logoysk Castle Site was considered one of the most fortified places. It was located on the right bank of the Haina River and was protected by deep moats and earthen ramparts. The height of the fortifications reached 11 meters, while the moat was 32 meters wide and 22 meters deep. The only way to enter was via a wooden bridge suspended over the moat on iron chains. Oak walls with watchtowers stood atop the ramparts, ensuring control over the surrounding area.
Evolution of the Castle Site: From Wooden Fort to Stone Castle
Initially, the castle site was a simple wooden fortification, but constant attacks forced the princes to turn it into a powerful fortress. By the 14th century, Grand Duke Vytautas expanded the castle, doubling its area. Over time, the Tyszkiewicz estate emerged here—one of the most famous architectural complexes of the late classicism period. Unfortunately, during World War II, the building was destroyed, and no restoration efforts were undertaken.
Castle Site: Archaeological Finds and Legends
The castle site, also known as Castle Hill, has become an object of archaeological research. Excavations confirm that a fortification existed here long before the first mention of Logoysk in chronicles. Numerous legends speak of hidden treasures and the ghosts of ancient defenders, making this place particularly intriguing for mystery enthusiasts.
Current Condition and Tourist Appeal
Today, on the site of the ancient castle site, there is a city park—a great place for recreation. It features walking paths, children's and sports playgrounds, and access to the river. However, the ruins of ancient structures are gradually deteriorating, and the area requires maintenance. Despite this, the Logoysk Castle Site remains a popular tourist attraction, drawing travelers, history enthusiasts, and archaeologists.
