Trinitarian monastery housing

Type: Monasteries Date of Foundation: 1762 year Status: Republican value Republic of Belarus, Minsk region, Molodechno

In the city of Maladzyechna, not far from the market square, lies a rare example of late Baroque architecture — the building of the former Trinitarian monastery, erected in 1762. This architectural monument is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus and still preserves traces of the city’s spiritual, educational, and cultural past. Today, it can be seen on the grounds of an industrial enterprise.

History

The history of the monastery complex begins in 1758, when a wooden church was built on this site. Soon after, the church was transferred to the Trinitarian order, and in 1762, a stone monastery building appeared thanks to the efforts of Tadeusz Ksawery Ogiński, grandfather of the famous composer Michał Kleofas Ogiński.

After the monastery was closed, the building found a new purpose. In 1864, the first teachers’ seminary in Belarus was opened here — an educational institution that played a significant role in the region’s development. The seminary had its own library, theater, and in 1910, a museum was established. Over fifty years, it produced more than 2,000 teachers, including notable cultural and public figures such as F.I. Volynets, M. Charot, and P.M. Sharangovich.

Architecture

The building’s architecture is a fine representation of late Baroque: harmonious proportions, distinctive window openings, and restrained decorative elements. Although the church was destroyed during World War II, the monastery building itself survived. Its walls preserve the memory of generations of educators and enlighteners. After the war, the structure was used for industrial needs — particularly by a machine-building plant, on whose premises it still stands. The building has been conserved, and several commemorative plaques have been installed on its façade.
