The ethnographic complex «Mill»
Ethnographic Complex "Mill" is a unique open-air museum that allows visitors to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of early 20th-century Zaslavl. The complex introduces visitors to the traditions of flour milling, rural life, and crafts. Its main exhibit is an old steam-powered mill that supplied flour to the local population for decades. Today, this historical site is part of the historical and cultural museum-reserve "Zaslavl" and is a popular destination for excursions in Belarus.
History of Creation
The steam-powered mill in Zaslavl was built in 1910 with the funds of local entrepreneur Mekhedko-Savitsky. Initially, it operated on a steam engine, but over time, it was modernized: in the 1930s, a diesel engine from the Polish factory "Perkun" was installed, and in the 1950s, it was replaced with an electric motor. For almost 80 years, the mill functioned efficiently, but eventually fell into disrepair. After restoration, it became a key element of the ethnographic complex, which also includes other historical buildings.
Main Objects and Architecture of the Complex
The main attraction of the complex is the three-story wooden mill building, which has been preserved in its historical appearance. Inside, visitors can see original mechanisms and equipment that demonstrate the grain milling process in the early 20th century. In addition to the mill, the ethnographic complex includes:
-
The Carters’ House — a small wooden building where workers who transported grain and flour lived. The exhibition features household items, furniture, tools, and clothing used in the early 20th century.
-
The Granary — a building for storing grain and flour. The exhibition displays traditional sacks, chests, and other items used for storing and transporting flour during that period.
-
The Blacksmith’s Workshop — a craft workshop where blacksmiths worked, making and repairing metal components for the mill and other agricultural needs. The forge contains antique tools, a furnace, an anvil, and examples of wrought iron products.
The architectural design of the buildings recreates the atmosphere of a traditional Belarusian village, making the complex an interesting site for excursions from Minsk and other cities.
