The complex of buildings of the former Trinity Monastery bazilianok
The complex of buildings of the former Trinity Monastery of the Basilian Nuns is a unique architectural ensemble located in the historic center of Minsk, on Trinity Hill. Today, a modern aparthotel is housed here, harmoniously integrated into the building with a rich spiritual and medical history. This site is recognized as a cultural and historical landmark of Belarus and is a fascinating location for themed excursions. Visitors to the capital can book an excursion to explore this complex as part of tours around Belarus or join an excursion from Minsk with a professional guide.
Historical Background
The origins of the Trinity Monastery of the Basilian Nuns date back to the 15th century, when a wooden church already stood on this site. The women’s monastery was founded in 1630 thanks to the generous donation of Maryna Vezhevich. Having endured destruction during the Northern War, fires, and regime changes, the monastery gradually lost its religious role. In 1839, after the Uniate Church was abolished, the buildings were transferred for medical use. By the 1840s, a city hospital had been established here, which would later become known as the 2nd Clinical Hospital. Notably, in 1923, the first blood transfusion in Belarus was performed in this very hospital. The hospital operated until 2012, after which it relocated and the old complex was revitalized.
Architecture
The complex is a classic example of late Classicist architecture. The main monastery building, originally two stories high, was erected by architect Fyodor Kramer at the end of the 18th century. After a fire in 1807, it was reconstructed by Mikhail Chakhovsky, who added a gallery. A third floor was later added. Strict forms, symmetrical facades with risalits, hipped roofs, rusticated ground floor, and spacious basements give the buildings a monumental appearance. The Invalids’ Home and Almshouse, built in the mid-19th century, follow the same style: three-storey, rectangular in layout, with minimalist decor and simple window frames. The ensemble as a whole offers a rare blend of spiritual, social, and architectural value in Minsk.
