Suvorov Military School in Minsk
Minsk Suvorov Military School is one of the country’s oldest military-education institutions, preparing teenagers for further studies at military universities. The complex includes academic buildings, a parade ground, sports facilities, and memorial sites connected with military glory and Suvorov cadet traditions. Located within the city limits, it is often included in routes of sightseeing tours around Belarus and themed tours of Minsk.
History and architecture of the school’s present-day ensemble
The present building of the Minsk Suvorov Military School at 29 M. Bahdanovich Street arose on the site of an 18th-century convent of the Catholic Order of the Mariavites. In 1811, funded by the Charity Society and designed by the provincial architect Chekhovsky, a stone monastery with a hospital for the elderly, the poor, and children born out of wedlock was erected here; the composition was completed by the Church of St. Vincent in the then-fashionable Empire style.
Several decades later the monastery was dissolved, and the buildings were transferred to an Orthodox theological seminary, which functioned here until the revolution. Among its graduates was Jazep Hoshkevich, the son of a village priest from Rechytsa Uyezd, who in 1858 became the first diplomatic representative of the Russian Empire in Japan and the first foreigner permitted to travel outside the capital.
From 1921 the former cells were occupied by the military: the infantry courses were transformed into the United Military School under the leadership of Yan Fabrizius, a four-time recipient of the Order of the Red Banner and a hero of the Civil War; until the 1930s instruction was conducted in Belarusian. After World War II, following a major reconstruction in the “Stalinist Empire” style with two additional floors, the former convent became home to the cadets of the Minsk Suvorov Military School.
