This church is the only fully preserved 12th-century structure in Belarus and represents an outstanding example of Polotsk architecture.

History

The church was built between 1120 and 1150 at the initiative of Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk. According to the saint's hagiography, the construction was overseen by the architect Ioann, who, according to legend, received divine revelation about the necessity of building the church. The construction was completed in 30 weeks. In 1161, the famous Cross of Euphrosyne of Polotsk was made for the church by master Lazar Bohsha. Despite numerous historical upheavals, including changes between different denominations and closure during the Soviet period, the church has survived to the present day almost unchanged.

Architecture

The Transfiguration Church is a six-pillar, three-nave, single-dome church with one apse. Its architecture is characterized by vertical emphasis and a tiered composition, reflecting the influence of traditional wooden architecture. Inside the church, unique 12th-century frescoes created by Greek and local masters have been preserved, serving as a valuable example of Old Russian monumental painting.

Cultural and religious significance

The Transfiguration Church holds great importance for the Orthodox culture and the history of Belarus. It is associated with Saint Euphrosyne of Polotsk, one of the most venerated saints of the country. The church is a pilgrimage site and a spiritual center of the region. Its architecture and frescoes are of high value for the study of the history of art and religion in Eastern Europe.
