The monument to P.Rak tank crew
The Monument in Honor of the Heroic Crew is a representation of the IS-2 tank, installed on a concrete pedestal. The memorial plaque bears an inscription dedicated to the Heroes of the Soviet Union – Guard Lieutenant Pavel Nikolaevich Rak, Guard Senior Sergeant Alexey Alexeevich Petryaev, and Guard Sergeant Alexander Ivanovich Danilov. These soldiers perished on June 30, 1944, in battles for the liberation of the city of Borisov from Nazi invaders.
History of the Monument
The monument was erected in 1960 at the initiative of Borisov garrison veterans. Their proposal was supported by Major General Pavel Mikhailovich Bordyukov. The commemoration of the tank crew became a significant historical event for the city of Borisov, reminding future generations of the heroism of Soviet soldiers.
Choosing the Tank for the Monument
Pavel Rak’s crew fought on the legendary T-34 tank, but for a more monumental and visually impactful representation, the decision was made to place a heavy IS-2 tank on the pedestal. This battle machine symbolizes the power and strength of the Soviet Army during World War II.
Current Condition of the Memorial
Currently, the monument has been dismantled due to the reconstruction of Gagarin Street in Borisov. The tank has been sent for restoration and will be reinstalled in its renovated form once the repair works are completed. The restored memorial will remain an essential part of the city's historical heritage.
