The Chapel of Saint Paraskeva of Polykovichi is a significant monument of religious architecture in Belarus, located in the village of Polykovichi, 7 kilometers from Mogilev. The chapel is closely connected to the well-known Polykovichi spring — a natural source believed to have healing properties. This complex is an important center of pilgrimage and spiritual life in the region.

History

The village of Polykovichi was first mentioned in 1501. According to historical records, in 1552 these lands, including the spring, belonged to the Mogilev starosta Stanislaw Kezgajlo. In the 19th century, when Count Rimsky-Korsakov became the owner of the area, a stone grotto was built above the spring, and a chapel in honor of Saint Paraskeva was constructed nearby. These initiatives helped turn Polykovichi into a place of mass pilgrimage, especially on the 8th to 10th Fridays after Easter, when processions and prayer services were held.

After a period of neglect during Soviet times, restoration of the chapel began in the late 1990s. On May 29, 2000, it was consecrated, marking the revival of spiritual life at the site.

Architecture

The modern Chapel of Saint Paraskeva was reconstructed according to historical drawings and photographs, staying as true to the original as possible. The building is made of red brick in traditional Orthodox style: a cross-shaped floor plan, a central drum with a dome, surrounded by four smaller onion-domed towers. This architectural solution gives the chapel a majestic and harmonious appearance, emphasizing its spiritual significance.

Cultural and religious significance

The chapel and spring are a place of pilgrimage for both believers and tourists. Saint Paraskeva is traditionally prayed to for family well-being, a successful marriage, and a good harvest. In November, on the day of her commemoration, a festival is held in Polykovichi with folk ensembles, exhibitions, and fairs, helping preserve and promote the region’s cultural traditions.
