The monument to Jakub Kolas in Nikolaevschizna
The Monument to Yakub Kolas in the village of Nikolaevshchina is a memorial site installed in 1972 to mark the 90th anniversary of the birth of the national poet of Belarus. The monument commemorates the writer’s childhood and youth spent in these places.
History
Nikolaevshchina is closely connected with the life and work of Yakub Kolas. From 1892 to 1894, the future poet studied at the local primary school. In July 1906, an underground teachers' congress was held in the village, in which he took part. The installation of the monument in 1972 was a tribute to the poet in his native land.
Architecture
The monument consists of a bronze bust of Yakub Kolas created by sculptors Aleksey Glebov and Ihar Kravchenko, and architect Leo Mitskevich. The bust is mounted on a rectangular pedestal faced with labradorite. The height of the bust is 1.1 meters, with the total height of the monument being 3.6 meters. A line from the 1936 poem “With a Song I Greet You” is engraved on the pedestal: “Soviet land, new people! With a song I greet you!”
