The Holy Trinity Church in Zelva is a vivid example of early 20th-century sacred architecture, located in the town of Zelva, Grodno Region. This parish church belongs to the Grodno Eparchy of the Belarusian Exarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church and serves as a significant spiritual and cultural center of the region. The church attracts attention not only due to its expressive architecture but also because of its rich historical background.

History

The brick church was built in 1913 based on a design by architect I.P. Dyakonsky. However, its fate was not easy: in the mid-20th century, during a period of religious repression, the church was closed. Initially, the building was converted into a store, and later it became a grain warehouse. Only in the late 1980s, thanks to the efforts of local residents and clergy, the sanctuary was returned to the faithful. Since then, the church has once again fulfilled its original mission and has become an integral part of Zelva’s spiritual life. Visiting this church is part of various excursions around Grodno Region, offering a chance to connect with the region’s history.

Architecture

The church in Zelva is an example of the Neo-Romanesque style, manifested in a three-nave, twin-towered structure with a symmetrical spatial composition. The main facade is adorned with a tall roof and a distinctive double-eaved overhang between the towers, echoing Baroque wooden architecture traditions. The towers are square, two-tiered, and topped with slender spires. Above the apse is a small timber-framed tower with a unique two-level finish. Inside, six octagonal columns divide the space into three naves. The interior decor is modest and restrained, emphasizing its resemblance to medieval Romanesque churches.
