Komsomol Lake
Komsomolskoye Lake is a picturesque artificial reservoir located in the northwestern part of Minsk. It covers an area of about 0.42 sq. km, with a length of 1.5 km, a width of up to 400 m, and a maximum depth of 4.5 m. The lake is part of the Vileyka-Minsk water system, formed by a dam on the Svisloch River. Since its creation, the lake has become one of the most popular recreation spots in the capital: in summer, people swim and rent boats or catamarans, while in winter, they stroll along the snow-covered embankments. Komsomolskoye Lake is not just a natural retreat within city limits — it is a result of a unique engineering and civic project.
History
The idea to build the lake emerged in 1940 thanks to the initiative of the editorial team of the «Sovetskaya Belorussiya» newspaper, supported by the city council and party committee. The main goal was to prevent frequent flooding of the riverside districts along the Svisloch. In the preceding years, water levels rose to critical heights, threatening local infrastructure and residents' safety.
The excavation of the lake basin was done by hand, often during off-hours and through work assignments. Despite criticism from the Soviet leadership, the project was personally approved by Stalin and funded through the state budget.
The first filling of the lake began on June 18, 1941, with the official opening scheduled for June 22 — the very day the Great Patriotic War began. Instead of festivities, citizens heard a radio announcement about the invasion.
