Red Barracks in Bereza

Type: The square and urban development Date of Foundation: 1 century Status: Regional value Republic of Belarus, Brest region, Bereza, Lenina str., 104

The Red Barracks in Byaroza are a unique monument of 19th-century military architecture, preserved to this day in the heart of the town. Originally built for the needs of the Imperial Russian Army, they witnessed the turbulent events of the 20th century — world wars, political repression, and regime changes. Today, they serve not only as a historical landmark but also as a cultural hub: one of the buildings now houses a branch of the Byaroza Local History Museum — the Art Gallery.

History

The barracks were constructed between 1894 and 1898 to accommodate the 151st Pyatigorsk Infantry Regiment of the Russian Empire. During World War I, the complex was used as a German military hospital. From 1934 to 1939, the barracks became the site of the infamous Kartuz-Byaroza concentration camp for political prisoners, through which nearly 10,000 people passed. This period marks one of the darkest chapters in the site's history.

After the incorporation of Western Belarus into the USSR, the building once again became a military facility, hosting units of the Red Army. During World War II, the barracks were occupied by German forces and were reportedly used either as a Nazi concentration camp or a rest house for soldiers. The final military unit stationed here was the 105th Anti-Aircraft Missile Brigade, disbanded in 1993.

Architecture

The complex is a striking example of late 19th-century military barrack architecture. Built from solid red brick, the buildings are connected into a strong linear composition. The structure retains many original features: pointed arch windows, brick ornamentation, arched entrances, and a disciplined layout. Some rooms have been partially reconstructed for modern use, while preserving their historic look. Of particular note is the restored building now housing the «Art Gallery».
