Church of St. Nicholas in Peski
St. Nicholas Church in Pieski
General Information
In the very center of the village of Pieski, located in a picturesque part of Belarus, stands the stone Orthodox Church of St. Nicholas. This active church has preserved its spiritual atmosphere and architectural traditions. Built in the second half of the 19th century, it remains an important historical and cultural landmark of the local community.
History
The church was constructed between 1868 and 1870 on the site of an older wooden temple. The new stone building was erected near the former Church of the Apostle John the Theologian. The new construction inherited the spiritual significance of its predecessor. Unlike many other churches, the Church of St. Nicholas in Pieski was never closed during the Soviet anti-religious campaigns, which makes it especially valuable in the context of Belarusian Orthodox history.
Architecture
The church was built in the retrospective Russian style typical of the second half of the 19th century. It consists of four main architectural sections, harmoniously combined into a single structure. Eye-catching elements include onion-shaped domes, decorative arcature belts, and a distinct silhouette that emphasizes the spiritual vertical of the building. Inside, the church features a two-tiered iconostasis. One of its most treasured relics — the 17th-century icon “Venerable Paraskeva with Life” — is now preserved at the Museum of Ancient Belarusian Culture in Minsk. The entrance to the church grounds is adorned with majestic stone gates.
