Resurrection Chapel in Petrikov

Type: Cemeteries, burial places, chapels Style: Neorussian Date of Foundation: 1 century Status: Regional value Republic of Belarus, Gomel region, Petrikov, Cientralnaja square

In the very heart of the town of Petrikov, on its main square, stands the Petrikov Resurrection Chapel — a 19th-century architectural relic and a testament to the region's vibrant ecclesiastical history. It is the only surviving part of what was once a grand church complex, which also included the Resurrection Church — the tallest building in Petrikov at the time.

History

The Petrikov religious ensemble was constructed in 1846 by craftsmen from Kremenchuk (Ukraine) and became an important spiritual center of the region. The Resurrection Church, which towered over the town, played a significant role in the lives of the local people until 1929, when its decline began: the bells were removed from its domes, and the interior was converted into a cinema and dance hall.

The church was ultimately destroyed in 1957. The chapel remained the only surviving part of the ensemble, miraculously preserved through the Soviet era and now regarded as a valuable monument of architecture and spirituality.

Architecture

The Petrikov Chapel is a vivid example of church architecture in the Russian Revival style. Though compact, it is striking in design and was originally built as an annex to the main church, but today stands as an independent architectural landmark. The onion-shaped dome crowns the building, emphasizing its vertical composition, while decorative bands and kokoshniks add rhythm and festive character to the facades.

The form and decoration of the chapel reflect symbolic features typical of ecclesiastical architecture of that period. Despite its modest size, it possesses strong artistic expressiveness and harmoniously integrates into the urban landscape.
