Victory Square
Victory Square is one of the central and most significant symbols of Minsk, the capital of Belarus. It is located on Independence Avenue, between Zakharova and Kiseleva Streets, in a picturesque area near the floodplain of the Svisloch River. This is not just an architectural space — it is a sacred place of memory dedicated to the heroism of the Belarusian people and Soviet soldiers during the Great Patriotic War. The square serves as a venue for ceremonial events and is one of the most popular stops on excursions around Belarus.
History
Until 1958, the square was known as Round Square. After the end of World War II, it gained the status of a memorial site: on July 3, 1961, the Eternal Flame was lit here — a symbol of remembrance and gratitude for the liberation of Minsk. Later, in the 1980s, capsules containing soil from Hero Cities such as Moscow, Leningrad, Kyiv, the Brest Fortress, and others were installed. In 1985, to mark the 40th anniversary of Victory, the Memorial Hall was opened beneath the square, in the underpass. Today, the site combines the functions of a memorial, an architectural ensemble, and an important stop on educational and patriotic tours for those who choose to book an excursion with a visit to the capital.
Architecture
The square has a rectangular shape, ending in a semicircle on one side. Its central feature is a granite obelisk — the Victory Monument, erected in 1954. It stands 38 meters tall and is topped with a three-meter image of the Order of Victory. At the base of the monument lie a sword and a laurel branch — symbols of triumph. Bronze bas-reliefs on the pedestal illustrate various aspects of struggle and victory: from the feats of partisans to the glory of fallen heroes. Surrounding the square are residential buildings with colonnades and towers, green parks, the entrance to the Central Children’s Park, and the restored House-Museum of the First Congress of the RSDLP. Altogether, these elements form a unified and expressive architectural composition, harmoniously integrated into the urban fabric of Minsk.
Excursions
Victory Square is included in many excursions around Minsk and is an essential part of routes introducing visitors to the heroic history of Belarus. Tourists who decide to book an excursion can not only see the majestic obelisk but also visit the Memorial Hall, hear captivating stories about Hero Cities and post-war architecture. The excursion from Minsk that includes Victory Square is especially popular among school groups, students, and foreign tourists interested in World War II history. This place leaves a lasting impression and allows one to feel the spiritual strength and resilience of the Belarusian people.
