Chelyuskintsev Forest Park

Type: Sports-entertaining objects, Parks, squares Date of Foundation: 1932 year Status: Regional value Republic of Belarus, Minsk, Nezavisimosti sq., 84

Chelyuskinites Forest Park is one of the largest green oases in the Belarusian capital, located within the Minsk park zone and covering an impressive 78 hectares. It is a popular spot for walking, family outings, and cultural events, recognized as a monument of landscape architecture. The park boasts rich flora, with over 22,000 trees, including maples, lindens, birches, firs, and pines, as well as ornamental plantings that form cozy alleys and picturesque views. Nearby are the Botanical Garden and the Children’s Railway, while along Independence Avenue, open-air art exhibitions are often held during the warmer months.

History

The park was established in 1932 on the site of an old forest known as «Komarovsky Forest». Initially named «Komarovsky Park», it was renamed in 1934 in honor of the crew of the Chelyuskin steamship expedition, which navigated the Northern Sea Route. Over the years, the park has held significant historical meaning: in its northeastern part lies a mass grave of victims of the Nazi occupation — soldiers, underground fighters, and civilians. In 1955, a memorial monument was erected here. A special place is held by the «Sculpture of a Mourning Woman» — a symbol of the tragic pages of the 20th century’s history.

Infrastructure

Modern Chelyuskinites Park is not only a green recreational area but also a well-equipped space with developed infrastructure. The southern section hosts sports grounds, cafés and kiosks serving Belarusian cuisine, as well as rental services and dance halls. Visitors can relax both mentally and physically — from leisurely walks to active games and sports. The park also offers children's playgrounds with safe surfaces, slides, and swings, along with a range of amusement rides, including the legendary «roller coasters» — among the first in Belarus. The park is divided into zones: for quiet rest, children's activities, and administrative needs.
