Monument to Soviet soldiers of the Second World War in Grodno
The Monument to the Liberating Soldiers — the legendary T-34-85 tank, installed on Soviet Square in Grodno, is one of the city's main landmarks. This monument is dedicated to the soldiers of the 2nd and 3rd Belorussian Fronts, who liberated Grodno from Nazi occupiers on July 16, 1944.
History of the Monument’s Installation
The tank monument was installed on February 23, 1968, on the site of a former square in the city center. The project was designed by architect G. Fedosenko. The tank, bearing the number "200," is mounted on a massive pedestal engraved with a dedication to the Soviet liberating soldiers. The total height of the monument is 6 meters.
Reconstruction of Soviet Square
In 2005, the reconstruction of Soviet Square began, replacing the park with small architectural structures. The issue of relocating the monument to the military equipment park near the Mound of Glory was raised. City council deputies consulted with veterans of the Great Patriotic War, who did not object to the relocation. However, the decision was revised, and the T-34 tank remained in its historical place.
The Mystery of the Missing Headlamp
In 2016, a city resident reported to the police about the theft of a part of the monument — the left fog light. This detail is of collectible value due to its rarity. According to one version, the lamp was removed for restoration, but no official confirmation was provided. To this day, the tank remains without its "left eye."
Historical Inconsistencies
Military historians claim that the tank installed on the pedestal was not involved in the battles for Grodno. This model of the T-34-85 was only produced from 1946, after the war. Moreover, tanks were not used in the liberation of the city, and the number "200" on the turret, according to researchers, could not have existed. The origin of the seven red stars on the tank's body, which signify destroyed enemy machines, remains a mystery.
Excursions to the T-34 Tank Monument
Despite debates about historical accuracy, the T-34-85 tank remains one of Grodno’s symbols. This site attracts tourists interested in military history and the heroic past of the city. Grodno excursions often include a visit to this monument, offering a glimpse into the great events of 1944.
