Church history: from a wooden chapel to a majestic cathedral

The Catholic parish in Zhupany was established as early as the 16th century, when the first wooden chapel was consecrated. However, by the late 16th century, during the ownership of the Radziwiłł family, the church was converted into a Calvinist cathedral. Only in the 19th century, when Zhupany came into the possession of the Chapski family, Count Adam Chapski allocated funds for the construction of a stone church. Due to the 1863–1864 uprising, construction was temporarily halted, but by 1875, the church was completed and consecrated.

Connection to Francišak Bahuševič

St. Peter and Paul Church was the final resting place of the Belarusian poet Francišak Bahuševič – his funeral service was held here in 1900. His grave is located in the church cemetery, and inside the temple, a memorial plaque is dedicated to him.

Architectural features of the church

St. Peter and Paul Church is a Neo-Gothic structure with striking architectural elements: its floor plan forms a rectangular shape divided into three naves, with a three-tier tower attached to the main facade, topped with an octagonal spire featuring pointed arch windows.

The rear wall of the church is flat and adorned with a cross – the absence of a traditional apse makes its appearance unique. The church walls are decorated with rubble stone patterns, creating an impressive texture. The interior is adorned with 19th-century ornamental paintings that have been preserved to this day. The central nave is covered by a cylindrical vault, while the side naves feature cross vaults. The interior space is supported by eight columns on high pedestals, giving the church a solemn and grand atmosphere.
