The settlement Val

Type: Archaeological monuments Date of Foundation: 13 century Status: Regional value Zaslavl

Hillfort "Val", also known as the Zaslavl Castle, is an outstanding archaeological monument of the 11th-12th centuries. It is located in the city of Zaslavl, one of the oldest settlements in Belarus. In the Middle Ages, this place was home to the "detinets" – the central fortified part of the city of Izyaslavl, founded at the end of the 10th century.

The defensive system of the hillfort included earthen ramparts 3-3.5 meters high, which were built from sand and reinforced on the inside with clay and stones. In some sections, wooden structures were used to strengthen the fortress's defenses. The castle ramparts housed entrance gates – the Big and Small Bramas. For additional protection, a moat was dug around the fortress, and an artificial lake was created, formed by the waters of the Svisloch River, which were held back by dams.

In the central part of the fortifications stood a defensive-type church – Transfiguration Church. It not only served as a religious center but also performed defensive functions, being part of the overall defense system. Today, Hillfort "Val" attracts numerous tourists and is included in excursions across Belarus, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of the region's medieval history. Those interested can book an excursion with a visit to Val and other sights of Zaslavl.

History of Creation

The history of Hillfort "Val" is closely linked to the foundation of the city of Izyaslavl, which appeared at the end of the 10th century. According to legend, it was founded by Prince Izyaslav, the son of Kyiv Prince Vladimir and Princess Rogneda of Polotsk. The city played an important role in the defense system of the western borders of Kievan Rus.

In the 11th-12th centuries, Zaslavl was a major fortified settlement. During this period, the defensive system was created, consisting of powerful ramparts and moats. The main gates of the fortress were the Big and Small Bramas, through which access to the "detinets" was granted. The Transfiguration Church, built in the center of the citadel, served not only as a place of worship but also as a refuge during attacks.

In the 13th-14th centuries, with the weakening of Kievan Rus, Zaslavl gradually lost its defensive significance. However, the fortifications continued to exist and were used in later periods. In the 17th century, construction work was carried out on the castle grounds, but by the 18th-19th centuries, much of the fortifications had lost their original function.

Current State

Today, Hillfort "Val" is an archaeological complex that includes the remains of medieval fortifications. Despite the destruction of many wooden structures, the earthen ramparts have been preserved and provide insight into what the castle looked like in ancient times.

Transfiguration Church, located in the center of the hillfort, has been preserved to this day and was reconstructed in the 19th century. It remains one of the most important landmarks of Zaslavl. In the 1980s, archaeological excavations were carried out on Val’s territory, uncovering remnants of wooden fortifications, ceramics, metal objects, and other medieval artifacts.

Hillfort "Val" is one of the most interesting historical sites in the Minsk region and is often included in excursions across Belarus. Due to its close proximity to the capital, a tour from Minsk to Zaslavl is a popular choice among tourists.
