Church of Saviour Transfiguration in Porplische

The Transfiguration Church in Porplishche is an outstanding monument of 17th-century wooden architecture, located in the agrotown of Porplishche, Dokshytsy District, Vitebsk Region, Belarus. Built in 1627 as a Uniate church, it was rebuilt in 1794 and has since served as an active Orthodox church, preserving its authenticity and spiritual significance for centuries.

History

The first mention of a church in Porplishche dates back to 1627, when a wooden Transfiguration Uniate Church was built with funds from Franciszek and Anna Zebrzydowski. In 1794, on the initiative of local priest Zhdanovich and parishioners, the church was rebuilt, gaining features characteristic of Belarusian folk architecture. In 1883, a three-tiered bell tower was added to the main building, enhancing the visual presence of the church. Remarkably, the church remained active even during periods of persecution, continuing to serve the local congregation.

Architecture

Architecturally, the church is a cross-in-square building with a layout in the form of a Latin cross. All log structures are of equal height and covered with intersecting gable roofs with triangular pediments on the ends. At the crossing rises a massive octagonal light drum topped with a faceted dome and cupola. A distinctive feature of the church is the tilt of the main dome, visible to the naked eye. Inside, fragments of a carved wooden 17th-century altar have been preserved and used in the iconostasis and kiots. The carvings are done in low relief and feature plant motifs, angels, and female figures.
