History

The history of the Church of Saint Teresa in Shchuchin begins in the first quarter of the 19th century. Its construction took place between 1826 and 1829, initiated and funded by Prince Konstanty Drutski-Lubecki — a member of a noble magnate family who actively supported the Catholic Church and the mission of the Piarist Order. The Piarists, or the Order of the Pious Schools, were known for their educational mission: they provided education to youth, particularly of noble origin, and established schools and libraries at their monasteries.

Immediately after construction was completed, the church became an important spiritual and educational center in Shchuchin. However, it soon faced its first serious challenge. After the suppression of the November Uprising of 1830–1831 against the Russian Empire, widespread repressions began. In 1832, the church was closed, and the monastic activity was halted. The building remained unused for a long time, gradually falling into disrepair and losing much of its ecclesiastical property.

A new chapter in the church’s history opened after the end of World War I. Shchuchin became part of interwar Poland, and the church was returned to the Piarists. Religious life was restored, and the church once again became a spiritual center for local Catholics. However, in 1962, the Soviet authorities closed it once more. Its property was confiscated and transferred to the nearby Church of the Holy Trinity in Ishchelno, and the building was left neglected.
