The complex Jesuit Collegium in Orsha

The Jesuit Collegium Complex in Orsha is an outstanding architectural monument of the 17th century and one of the main historical and cultural treasures of the city. History

The history of the collegium dates back to 1604, when, by the order of the Chancellor of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, Lew Sapieha, the first building was constructed in Orsha to host local assemblies. In 1610, King Sigismund III transferred the property to the Jesuits, and soon one of the first educational institutions in the territory of modern Belarus was established here. Over its long history, the complex has witnessed many events — from the flourishing of science and education to dramatic changes and decline. Napoleon himself stayed here, and notable figures such as Pyotr Zavadovsky and Franciszek Dzierozynski received their education within its walls. In the 19th century, after the dissolution of the Jesuit order, the building was converted into a prison, which operated until the late 20th century.

Architecture

Originally, the complex was a two-story baroque-style structure with classrooms, a library, and a dining hall. Later, the building was adorned with decorative towers with clocks, and the entire complex was surrounded by a brick wall. A special place in the architectural composition was occupied by the Church of St. Michael the Archangel, built from red brick in grandiose forms. Fragments of its former décor, restored during recent renovations, have survived to this day. Today, the building appears solemn and historic, retaining its baroque austerity and elegance.
