Ilyinskaya Church in Gomel

Ilyinskaya Church – an active Old Believer church located in Gomel, behind the park palace, downstream of the Sozh River. It is a striking example of traditional Belarusian wooden architecture from the late 18th century. The church attracts attention with its authenticity and historical significance, being one of the oldest Old Believer shrines in Belarus. Today, it remains a place of spiritual life, drawing both believers and tourists.

History of Creation

Until 1737, the site of the present-day Ilyinskaya Church was home to the Old Believer Spas Church, which gradually fell into disrepair. The authorities decided to dismantle it and build a new church in honor of the Prophet Elijah. The church was consecrated on September 28, 1794. In the first half of the 19th century, the church housed both a male and female skete (hermitage), but in 1850 it was closed. Two years later, it reopened, and in 1853 it was converted into an Edinoverie (Old Believer–Orthodox) parish. Soon, however, the church returned to being exclusively Old Believer. According to legend, Emelyan Pugachev prayed in this church after returning from Turkey.

Architecture and Spiritual Life

Ilyinskaya Church is a three-part wooden structure, consisting of a rectangular narthex and a polygonal altar apse. A dome rises above the church, and a two-tiered bell tower stands nearby. The interior is distinguished by its simplicity and modesty, typical of Old Believer churches. Regular services are held here, attracting followers of the Old Believer tradition as well as those interested in Belarusian cultural heritage.
