History of the Church: Mysteries and Legends

The history of St. Elijah’s Church goes back centuries. Initially, the center of the Kobylnik parish was located in the Sosnovo pogost near Lake Myadel. There are two versions of the church’s origin in Sosnovo. According to one, after the 1830–1831 uprising, the church in Shemetovo was transferred to the Uniates and moved to Sosnovo. Another version claims that the church was initially located on Zamok Island on Lake Myadel and later relocated to the Perecheta Peninsula.

The Church in Historical Context

In 1880, the construction of a new stone church in Kobylniki was completed and consecrated in honor of St. Elijah. The state allocated significant funds for its construction, and a local landowner donated the land for the church. This church became an important spiritual center for the local community.

The church often found itself at the center of historical events. During World War I, it was destroyed along with the village, and during the German occupation, it served as a military hospital. The history of the church is filled with episodes related to power changes and wars.

The Revival of St. Elijah’s Church

After years of neglect, the church was reopened in 1988. The first service was held by Father Georgy Ivanovich Mitko. Local residents and community leaders played a significant role in its restoration. By 2000, a Sunday school for children from nearby villages was operating at the church.
