Exaltation of the Cross church in Lida
The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Lida is an outstanding monument of Catholic architecture, built in the Vilnius Baroque style. Located in the very heart of Lida, it is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus. Its elegant façade, rich interior decoration, and centuries-old history make this church a must-visit for anyone interested in the spiritual and cultural heritage of the country. A trip from Minsk to the Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Lida will be a true discovery even for seasoned travelers.
History
The first church on this site appeared as early as 1387 thanks to donations from King Jogaila — it was one of the first Catholic shrines in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. Initially, the wooden building stood closer to the castle, but was later moved to its current location. The present stone church was built between 1747 and 1770 and, according to one version, was designed by the famous architect Johann Christoph Glaubitz, founder of the "Vilnius Baroque" style. In 1993, a monument to Francysk Skaryna — the first Belarusian printer and a symbol of national enlightenment — was erected next to the church.
Architecture
The church has a T-shaped layout with a rectangular altar part. Inside, the temple impresses with its elegance and richness of decoration. The vaults and walls are adorned with frescoes painted in ochre, blue, and green tones. Notable scenes include “The Exaltation of the Holy Cross,” “The Annunciation,” “The Immaculate Conception,” and “The Handing of the Keys to Saint Peter.” Rococo-style sculptures and stucco, a wrought-iron pulpit shaped like a fluted bowl, and a high altar made of artificial marble with a colonnade and statues of Saints Peter and Paul emphasize the grandeur and refinement of this architectural masterpiece.
