Carmelite church of the Assumption of the Mother of God in Mstislavl

Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary – a magnificent Catholic temple in the city of Mstislavl, which is part of the Mstislavl Deanery of the Minsk-Mogilev Archdiocese. Founded in 1637 as a church at the Carmelite monastery, it is also known as the Carmelite Church. In 1746–1750, the church was reconstructed, giving it an even more impressive appearance. This unique architectural monument is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus and is one of the main attractions of Mstislavl.

History

The Carmelite Monastery, located at the foot of Castle Hill, was founded in the early 17th century. Initially, the church was wooden, but in 1617–1637, it was replaced with a grand stone structure. The historical events of 1654, when Carmelite monks were brutally killed after the capture of Mstislavl by Moscow troops, are depicted in two central frescoes of the church – “The Capture of Mstislavl by Moscow Troops in 1654” and “The Murder of Priests.”

In the mid-18th century, the church was reconstructed according to the design of the outstanding architect Johann Glaubitz, who added expressive elements in the Vilnius Baroque style. The interior decoration of the church amazes with its 20 fresco compositions from the 17th century, which have been preserved to this day.
