On a visit at Zyuzi

Type: Sports-entertaining objects Date of Foundation: 2007 year Status: Without a category Republic of Belarus, Minsk Region, Minsk district, der. Lake

We all know the kind-hearted Ded Moroz, who grants wishes on New Year's Eve. But not everyone is familiar with his great-grandfather – Zyuziya, the ancient spirit of winter, the guardian of blizzards and frosts. Our ancestors believed that Zyuziya controlled the cold, warned people of impending frosts, and could bring either a harsh winter or protection from bad weather.

Zyuziya – who is he?

Imagine a short, stocky old man with a long snow-white beard, thick hair, and an iron mace in his hands. He walks barefoot even in the harshest frosts and never wears a hat. Unlike Ded Moroz, Zyuziya is a spirit of the forests and blizzards, rarely showing himself to people. But when he does visit a village, it is always with good intentions. He may warn of the cold, help the poor, or simply stop by to enjoy some kutia.

People spoke of him with respect: “Zyuziya is in the yard – kutia is on the table”. That’s why, on the eve of the New Year, Belarusians would leave a plate of kutia on a separate table as an offering to Zyuziya, hoping that he would be pleased and not bring an overly harsh winter.

Today, you can experience this magical figure firsthand during excursions around Belarus. Visit two unique places where the winter fairy tale comes to life: The Museum of Folk Architecture and Life in Strochitsy and Grodno Estate Korobchitsy.

Strochitsy is a place where ancient folk traditions come to life. Here, guests will be greeted by Zaveya, Zyuziya’s helper, who will guide them into his magical world. But the path to the lord of winter is not an easy one – along the way, travelers will encounter the mysterious Zelyarka, Baba Yaga, and even a Dragon, who will put on a spectacular fire show. After all the trials, guests will enjoy a cozy meeting with Zyuziya himself. In his residence, visitors can warm up with a cup of hot tea, take part in traditional winter games, and try out various entertainments that Belarusians enjoyed in the old days.

During New Year excursions around Belarus, Zyuziya travels to Grodno Estate Korobchitsy, where he welcomes both children and adults to a festive interactive program. Here, visitors can not only meet the master of winter blizzards but also take part in a real Kolyada ritual, learn ancient fortune-telling traditions, compete in winter amusements, and test their strength in traditional contests, such as ice chopping. A special highlight of the program is a meeting with Ded Moroz and Snegurochka. Afterward, guests can enjoy a sleigh ride, taste festive treats, and simply immerse themselves in a magical atmosphere.
