A.Mickiewicz monument in Novogrudok
The Monument to Adam Mickiewicz is a significant historical and cultural landmark in the town of Navahrudak, Grodno Region, Belarus. It is dedicated to the outstanding poet of Belarusian origin, Adam Mickiewicz, who, along with Juliusz Słowacki and Zygmunt Krasiński, is considered one of the founders of Polish Romanticism. The monument was created by Belarusian sculptor Valeryan Yanushkevich.

The monument is located on Maly Zamok Street, in the very heart of historic Navahrudak, near key landmarks such as the Adam Mickiewicz Mound, the ruins of Navahrudak Castle, and the Farny Church, where the poet was baptized. Previous Memorial Sign
Before the current monument was erected, a stele with a mosaic portrait of Adam Mickiewicz stood in its place. It was created in 1975 by Belarusian artist V. Grek and remained an important symbol of remembrance until the installation of the new monument.
Solemn Unveiling of the Monument
The monument was officially unveiled on September 12, 1992, during an international celebration dedicated to Adam Mickiewicz. The event was attended by high-ranking officials from Poland, including Deputy Minister of Culture of Poland Michał Jagiełło and the first Polish ambassador to Belarus Elżbieta Smułkowa. On the same day, the Adam Mickiewicz House-Museum in Navahrudak was also reopened.
Description of the Monument
The bronze sculpture depicts a young Adam Mickiewicz in full height. His hair flows in the wind, and a long cloak adds expressiveness and dynamism to the figure. One of the poet’s hands is slightly raised, symbolizing inspiration and creative uplift. The monument is mounted on a massive field boulder, with a total height of 3.1 meters.
The Monument as Cultural Heritage
The Monument to Adam Mickiewicz in Navahrudak is not only a key landmark of the town but also a site of international historical and cultural significance. It is included in the State List of Historical and Cultural Values of the Republic of Belarus, emphasizing its importance for Belarusian and global heritage.
