Farny Catholic Church in Novogrudok
Novogrudok Farny Church of the Transfiguration is one of the oldest and most significant Catholic shrines in Belarus. This church is located in Novogrudok at the foot of Zamkova Hill on 1st May Street. Built at the end of the 14th century by Grand Duke Vytautas, the church was initially constructed in the Gothic style and later rebuilt in the Sarmatian Baroque style in the 18th century.
Architectural Features and Preserved Elements
Three Gothic chapels with unique ribbed vaults and stained-glass windows have survived to this day, giving the church a special atmosphere. Each chapel is dedicated to different saints, as the church was originally founded in honor of All Saints. The main facade of the church is adorned with two towers, while the interior is covered with a cylindrical vault with lunettes.
Historical Events and Famous Figures
The Church of the Transfiguration is the place where King Władysław Jagiełło married Sophia of Halshany in 1422, marking the beginning of the Jagiellonian dynasty. In this same church, the famous poet Adam Mickiewicz was baptized in 1799. A marble plaque on the church wall commemorates his baptism.
Periods of Destruction and Restoration
The history of the church is full of trials. After the suppression of the uprising in 1864, it was closed and fell into decline. It was only returned to Catholics in 1906. In the 1920s, restoration began under the guidance of architect Beil, thanks to the efforts of Prince Stanislaw Radziwill. After World War II, the church was closed again and returned to believers only in 1992.
The Miraculous Icon and the Relics of Blessed Sisters
A special place in the church is occupied by the miraculous icon of Our Lady of Novogrudok. The relics of 11 Nazarene nuns, who became martyrs during World War II while saving the lives of townspeople, also rest here. A memorial stele marks their first burial site.
