Benedictine Monastery in Nesvizh
The Benedictine Monastery Complex in Nesvizh — a unique monument of history and architecture, founded in 1596 with the funds of Prince Radziwill Sirotka and his wife, Elzbieta Eufemia. The complex was built according to the project of the famous Italian architect Giovanni Maria Bernardoni and included the monastery and the Church of Saint Eufemia, forming a harmonious architectural ensemble.
The First Female Catholic Monastery in Belarus
The Benedictine Monastery became the first female Catholic monastery in Belarus. A powerful bastion, a key element of Nesvizh’s defensive system, surrounded the monastery. Beyond the ramparts, there were moats filled with water from the Usha River, making the complex almost impregnable.
Changes and Challenges: From Monastery to Barracks
In 1876, the Church of Saint Eufemia was converted into an Orthodox church, and the monastery was closed and handed over for use as barracks by the Russian army. In 1920, the church became Catholic again, and nuns returned to Nesvizh from near Warsaw. However, in 1945, the church tower was destroyed. Today, only old photographs and images remind us of it.
Current State of the Monastery
After the war, the building of the monastery housed a pedagogical college, which still operates today. Despite numerous reconstructions and renovations, some sections of the old walls and a unique three-tiered bell tower from the second half of the 18th century have survived. This tower, built into the high wall, served as a gate to the monastery courtyard and is an important part of the complex’s historical appearance.
